Welcome to First Grade
First grade will be taught this year by Odyssey Wofford and Annie Stone using the team-teaching approach to the classroom. In team-teaching, as one teacher assumes the responsibility for the class wide instruction, the other teacher circulates the room and monitors student achievement and behavior. Each teacher is responsible for the planning and implementing of different aspects of the curriculum. Odyssey and Annie look forward to working together this year as a team and cultivating a true partnership in the classroom.
In first grade, first and foremost, we READ! The reading program we use is called "Open Court". This program includes phonics study, lessons on making words, word family work, and reading practice using decodable books. Our word wall is a wonderful tool for the students to use during our creative writing times. It is full at the end of the year of all of our high frequency words that we've learned how to read and spell.
Math time means using lots of "manipulatives" in first grade. We use the Everyday Math Program and we measure, count coins, learn to tell time, add and subtract, study numbers and number patterns, and so much more. The daily lessons are taught and practiced using dominoes, real money, teacher-made games, and everyday items. Math in first grade is very hands-on.
Our science curriculum includes learning about balance and motion, solids and liquids, and rocks and soils. Our first graders love the hands-on experiments that we cover. Also, throughout the year, we study the many varieties of plants and animals in our mountains. The students become excellent at nature journaling as they observe their beautiful environment.
Learning about the unique town of Cashiers is very important for first graders. We visit local businesses such as the bank, post office, and library to get a behind the scenes look. Our social studies topics include learning about wants verses needs, producers and consumers, and diversity in family units. We also have daily lessons to help us understand our Summit Seven Virtues and become good citizens.
As you can see, being in the first grade at such a unique school is a very special place to be. It is a fun way to spend the day, learn new things, and practice the virtues that we pledge each morning. Please feel free to stop in and take a look at what we're learning in first grade!
