Middle School Summer Reading

Middle School Summer Reading Assignments

Environmental Literature List

Recommended Reading list

Summer reading has proven to be an excellent way to maintain and improve fluency and comprehension skills over the summer months.  Research has shown that without summer reading, students often lose some of the reading skills learned during the previous school year. In order to encourage the love of reading in our students and to prevent the summer mushy brain syndrome (when brain cells atrophy due to long periods of dormancy), Summit has implemented a required reading program for grades 3-8.

You will find book lists and assignments below. The summer reading list has been developed to ensure that a wide range of interests and reading levels is represented. Middle school students are expected to read a total of three books this summer. One book is a required reading, one must be chosen from the Environmental Literature List, and one must be chosen from the Recommended Reading list. These books are available at local bookstores, the public library, or http://www.amazon.com/. We suggest the students choose and purchase their books by June 9th, and then one book can be read per month. Do not wait until August to begin your summer reading! Remember: a good book is a great companion on a road trip, long plane ride, or day at the beach!

If you have further questions about this assignment you may email Lauren Bennett at lbennett@summitschool.org.  Please note that the summer reading assignment will be due in Language Arts on Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Students who do not turn in the assignment by the due date will not receive credit.  This assignment will count as a Language Arts project grade.
