MARCH 23, 2020 - NC Public Schools to remain closed through May 15

Dear Summit Families,

This afternoon Governor Cooper announced that all North Carolina Public Schools will remain closed through May 15. This announcement does confirm the longer-term scenario for which we were preparing. Our team is now working to confirm Summit’s plan for supporting our students and families through the coming months, and will update you in the next few days with more information. Currently, there are a number of actions in motion at the state that will impact the details of our approach over the coming months. The North Carolina State Board of Education voted earlier today to request a one-year waiver for federal student testing requirements, and we expect that end-of-year state testing will be cancelled for the current school year. We are also awaiting confirmation from the state of any requirements of schools, including instructional hours, through this extended closure. While these details are worked out at the state level, our overarching mission as a school, and the priorities that have guided us through this past week, remain unchanged. We will continue to focus on supporting our students continued learning, and we will seek to do so with integrity to our mission, our Seven Virtues, and a deep commitment to our partnership with our families. Our circumstances are more challenging, but I have full confidence that, together, we will be an even stronger Summit on the other side. Thank you for all you do.

With gratitude,

Kurt
